SIG Pediatric Pain
Objectives of the SIG ‘Paediatric Pain’:
Pain in children and adolescents is on the rise in our society and affects both the somatic and mental health as well as the personal and academic development of young patients. This affects not only children and adolescents, but also their family environment to a large extent, with a significant impact on the quality of life of the entire family system. In order to avoid long-term and severe pain disorders in this young patient group in particular, early multimodal and interprofessional therapy is of particular importance.
Interprofessional outpatient centres for children and adolescents with chronic pain are few and far between in Switzerland, and specialised inpatient services are largely lacking. The SIG would like to work towards improving the care situation for young people with chronic pain.
Network:
The Special Interest Group (SIG) ‘Pediatric Pain’ aims to raise awareness of pain medicine for children and adolescents among both therapists and those affected, and to establish an official forum for multi-professional networking. With the help of the SIG, we want to raise awareness of the issue of chronic pain in children and adolescents and promote therapeutic and scientific exchange, further training and research projects.
Public relations:
The establishment and standardisation of a biopsychosocial understanding in the treatment of young people suffering from pain should be strengthened both in the healthcare system and among the general population. An open and inclusive exchange between the disciplines involved should promote mutual understanding in dealing with young people suffering from pain. Existing knowledge about the phenomenon of pain in children and adolescents should be made more accessible. The SIG’s online presence makes it possible to provide information and materials for those affected as well as for therapists.
Education:
Further training courses in pain therapy for children and adolescents are to be developed and established for specialists from various disciplines.
Services:
The SIG serves as a point of contact for questions relating to pain therapy in children and adolescents in research, practice and further training.

Patient Partner Project
We want to harness the expertise of young people who are or have been affected by chronic pain in clinical and scientific work, and have therefore founded the ‘Patient Partners’ group. Online meetings are held twice a year, led by two experts from practice and research. The young people affected serve as a sounding board for topics from clinical practice and research. Young people who would like to participate in the Patient Partners project can contact Alice Prchal (alice.prchal(a)kispi.uzh.ch) and Helen Koechlin (helen.koechlin(a)kispi.uzh.ch) Register. Age: 14 to 25 years old.
